Small changes to daily routines - like adding a bit more sleep, exercise, and vegetables – can significantly extend your healthy lifespan, according to a new study from the University of Sydney. Researchers found that combining lifestyle adjustments yields greater benefits than focusing on a single behavior.
The study, published this week, suggests that even modest, achievable changes can lead to more years lived in good health. Specifically, researchers linked 24 extra minutes of sleep, four additional minutes of vigorous exercise, and one extra serving of vegetables daily to four additional years free from chronic diseases such as dementia, cardiovascular disease, and type 2 diabetes.
“When we combine lifestyle changes, we get more bang for our buck and reduce the effort needed for any single behavior,” said researcher Nicholas Koemel of the University of Sydney. “You don’t need to focus on one area; small improvements across multiple fronts add up.”
This research builds on growing evidence that lifestyle factors play a crucial role in preventing chronic illness and extending healthy aging. More information on the importance of sleep can be found here.
