Powerful 8.8 Magnitude Quake Strikes Russia’s Far East,Unleashing Hazardous Waves
An 8.8-magnitude earthquake, followed by significant aftershocks, has rocked the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia, prompting widespread tsunami alerts across the northern Pacific. The powerful seismic event, which occurred around 11:30 am local time, has sent hazardous waves towards Hawaii, alaska, and other coastal regions.
Severo-Kurilsk Hit by First Tsunami Waves, Damage Reported
The initial tsunami waves have already made landfall in Severo-kurilsk, located in the northern Kuril Islands. eyewitness accounts describe a fish processing plant being swept away by the surge, and the local port has been inundated, with ships torn from their moorings and carried into the strait. In Kamchatka’s Elizovsky district,a wave measuring 3-4 meters was recorded,according to Emergency Situations Minister Sergey Lebedev,who has strongly advised residents to stay clear of the coastline.
Japan and US West Coast on High Alert
Along the coast of Hokkaido in northern Japan,waves of approximately 30 centimeters have been observed,as reported by NHK. Authorities are cautioning that subsequent waves could be considerably larger. The US National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami advisory for the entire US West Coast, as well as for parts of Canada and Alaska. Hawaii is also under a full tsunami advisory.
the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has released an interactive map detailing the earthquake’s epicenter and the extent of tsunami warnings and threats across the vast Pacific region.
