Liverpool FC have decided to remain silent over the ongoing investigation into Premier League referee David Coote. This comes after the official’s controversial video became a hot topic online.
The video began circulating on social media on Monday afternoon and shows Coot, 42, making disparaging remarks about Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp. This comes just days after Liverpool won 2-0 against Aston Villa at Anfield.
In the video, Coot criticizes Liverpool’s performance as “poor” and uses harsh language towards Klopp following the recent incident involving the German tactician.
James Pearce of The Athletic reported that Liverpool are aware of the existence of the video, but believe it would be inappropriate to make any official announcement at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Mirror’s Daren Lewis reported that Coot “strongly denied” any wrongdoing and claimed the viral video was faked against PGMOL, the official body of the sport. Technical experts are currently reviewing the footage, which will be a key element in the findings.
As the investigation progresses, the authenticity of the video is being evaluated. If confirmed to be genuine, it could jeopardize Coot’s chances of continuing as a first-class referee.
According to ESPN, PGMOL said it would not provide any additional updates until the investigation was concluded. However, Coot will not be able to work as a referee or VAR due to the international football break.
The incident puts PGMOL in a precarious position, especially as relations with fans of English clubs are already tenuous. Trust between fans and officials is likely to be further damaged by this incident, and it will take significant effort for the refereeing body to restore that trust.
