Liverpool, England – Liverpool battled to a 2-2 draw against Fulham at anfield on Friday night, a result marred by a controversial red card for defender Andrew Robertson. Despite the setback, manager Arne Slot defended his player, attributing the incident to a tough challenge Robertson received earlier in the match.
Fulham stunned the home crowd with an early goal from Andreas Pereira in the 11th minute. Just six minutes later, Robertson was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Harry Wilson, deemed to have denied a clear goalscoring chance.
Playing with 10 men, Liverpool fought back valiantly. Cody Gakpo pulled a goal back just two minutes after halftime, but Fulham regained the lead through Rodrigo Muniz. Diogo Jota, coming off the bench, rescued a point for Liverpool with a late equalizer in the 85th minute.the draw leaves Liverpool atop the Premier League table with 36 points, five ahead of Chelsea and six ahead of Arsenal.
Slot acknowledged the difficulty of playing with a man down but praised Robertson’s character. “That’s the character Robbo shows,” Slot told reporters after the match. “If you get a tackle like that,a kick to the knee,it can be painful for a few minutes. if you keep running and it feels better, that’s what we expect.”
“I have a defender on the bench, who isn’t a left-back, so you hope he can do his job and do it well,” slot continued. “But at the moment I noticed he wasn’t himself was when they played the ball behind and he started running, and was able to get to Ali [Alisson Becker].I thought, ‘Hmm, OK, let’s see how this goes,’ and I guess a moment later he got the red card.”
“Ther’s nothing to blame him for. His character came out in wanting to keep playing despite the hard tackle. It’s a shame it ended with a deserved red card,” Slot concluded, defending his player’s commitment.
