Liverpool manager Arne Slot has provided an encouraging update on the recovery of teenage defender Giovanni Leoni, who is progressing well following his anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained on his debut for the club.
The 18-year-old Italian centre-back suffered the ACL injury during Liverpool’s Carabao Cup third-round victory over Southampton in September 2025, forcing him off after 81 minutes of what had been a promising first appearance in a Liverpool shirt. Subsequent tests confirmed the severity of the blow, with Slot initially stating Leoni would be sidelined for around a year.
However, in recent comments, Slot has highlighted positive signs in Leoni’s rehabilitation, noting the defender has “become a beast” during his time away from the pitch. The Liverpool boss praised the youngster’s work ethic and mental approach to recovery, suggesting the setback could ultimately strengthen his development.
Slot added that Leoni has been posting rare updates on social media during his recovery, with reports from Italian outlet Mondo Primavera indicating he is progressing well and could significantly step up his rehabilitation in the coming weeks, potentially by the end of April 2026.
The injury arrived shortly after Leoni’s £26million summer move from Parma, where he signed a six-year contract at Anfield. Despite only making one senior appearance for Liverpool so far, Slot remains confident in the defender’s long-term prospects, emphasizing his youth and the time he has ahead to recover and contribute.
With Leoni continuing his recovery, Liverpool’s defensive options remain limited in the short term, with Slot having previously acknowledged relying on Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez as his recognised centre-back options. However, the manager has reiterated his belief that he has sufficient alternatives to cover the position while awaiting Leoni’s return.
The defender’s absence has come amid a season in which Liverpool have dealt with multiple injury setbacks across the squad. Slot confirmed earlier in April 2026 that Alexander Isak would be returning soon, offering some relief in other areas, while expressing hope that Leoni’s comeback could align with the start of pre-season preparations for the following campaign.
