Liwa Festival Draws Over 700,000 Visitors, Showcasing UAE’s Cultural and Tourism Appeal
The Liwa International Festival 2026 concluded after a 23-day run, attracting more than 700,000 visitors to the Al Dhafra Region of Abu Dhabi. The festival, held from December 12, 2025, to January 3, 2026, transformed the area surrounding Tal Moreeb, the UAE’s tallest sand dune, into a vibrant hub for culture, motorsports, and family entertainment.
The substantial turnout underscores the festival’s growing prominence as a key winter event in the United Arab Emirates, drawing attendees from across the country and internationally. Organizers highlighted the festival’s success in showcasing the unique tourism and cultural assets of the Al Dhafra region.
Liwa Village served as a central attraction, welcoming 274,440 visitors – a 26% increase compared to the previous edition. The expanded village featured five themed zones offering a diverse range of experiences, including cultural displays, live performances, dining options, retail opportunities, and family-friendly activities. Organizers increased seating capacity and introduced new attractions for visitors of all ages, with solar power contributing significantly to the site’s energy needs.
Motorsports remained a defining element of the festival, with participation in races and competitions rising by 47% year-on-year. The event drew drivers and enthusiasts from the GCC, Europe, and Asia, eager to test their skills on the challenging slopes of Tal Moreeb, often referred to as “the Scariest Dune” due to its height and steep incline.
Beyond the adrenaline-fueled competitions, the Liwa International Festival also served as a platform for celebrating and preserving Emirati heritage. The event featured traditional sports, cultural performances, and experiences designed to showcase the region’s rich history and traditions. Competitions and displays of traditional Emirati sports were held near Tal Moreeb and other historical sites, embodying the spirit and traditions of the Al Dhafra community.
The festival’s success reinforces the UAE’s commitment to developing its tourism sector and promoting its cultural identity on a global stage. The Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) organized the event, demonstrating its dedication to fostering cultural experiences and attracting visitors to the emirate.
Looking ahead, organizers have already announced the dates for the next edition of the festival: December 11, 2026, to January 2, 2027. The Liwa International Festival is expected to continue its growth and evolution, solidifying its position as a premier cultural and sporting event in the region.
