Liya Petrova, a rising star in the classical music world, is set too perform Vivaldi‘s Four Seasons this Tuesday in Bidart, France, coinciding with the concerto’s 300th anniversary. But this performance is more than just a celebration of a musical masterpiece; it’s a unique convergence of history, artistry, and the legacy of a remarkable instrument – a 1742 Guarnerius del Gesù violin crafted just kilometers from where Vivaldi composed his iconic work.

The Virtuoso and her Instrument: A Symbiotic Relationship

At 35, Bulgarian violinist Liya Petrova has already established herself as a captivating performer. her journey began with prodigious talent, giving her first orchestral concerts at the amazing age of five. The international stage beckoned in 2016, following her triumph at the prestigious Carl Nielsen international Violin Competition in Denmark. As then, Petrova has garnered numerous awards and performed with leading orchestras worldwide, captivating audiences with her technical brilliance and emotional depth. Her upcoming performance at the Classic Festival in Guéthary and Bidart marks a special occasion, not just for the festival but for Petrova herself. She will be performing with cellist Edgar Moreau and pianist Aurèle marthan, and alongside the soloists of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera of Versailles. This collaboration promises a fresh and intimate interpretation of The Four Seasons.

A Violin Born Near the Source of Inspiration

What truly elevates this performance is Petrova’s instrument: a “Guarnerius del Gesù” violin made by Pietro Rovelli in 1742. Guarnerius del Gesù violins are renowned for their powerful, resonant tone and are highly sought after by virtuosos. They are considered rivals to the instruments crafted by Antonio Stradivari, and Petrova’s violin is a prime example of the luthier’s artistry.

“It is a great joy for me to play The Four Seasons with the soloists of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera of Versailles because, we return to the spirit which presided in 1725, to their creation,” petrova explained. “The large rooms do not exist, we played with small sets. But the greatest emotion is to tell me that the composition of this universal work was made two hours from the place where my violin was made, a few years apart.I see an intimate relationship there, as if my violin had been designed to play this concerto.”

This proximity in time and location is striking. The realization that her violin was crafted so close to Vivaldi’s creative habitat deeply resonates with Petrova, fueling her interpretation and connection to the music. She describes a feeling that the instrument was almost destined to perform this particular concerto.

the Legacy of Guarnerius del Gesù

the Guarnerius family of luthiers, especially Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù, produced some of the most celebrated violins in history. Unlike Stradivari, who favored a more refined and symmetrical aesthetic, guarneri del Gesù’s instruments are characterized by their bold, sculptural forms and powerful sound. They were favored by legendary violinists like Niccolò Paganini, known for their ability to project in large concert halls.

Petrova’s initial reaction to the violin was one of awe and responsibility. She admits to feeling a tremor of apprehension when first handling the instrument, acutely aware of its immense value and historical significance. This reverence underscores her commitment to preserving and celebrating the legacy of both the violin and the music it is indeed designed to play.
