Lizzo Channels Sister Rosetta Tharpe in ‘Rosetta
Lizzo Steps into the Spotlight as the Godmother of Rock, Sister rosetta Tharpe
Lizzo, the Grammy-winning artist and classically trained flutist, is set to make her cinematic debut, embodying the spirit of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a true trailblazer and one of rock history’s most influential Black women. This biopic promises to shine a much-deserved spotlight on the legendary musician.
“I’m so excited to dive into her world and play her up! Because I do want to give her a certain mythology. She deserves to be canonized,” Lizzo shared with Paper magazine. To fully inhabit the role, Lizzo has been diligently learning the guitar and channeling Tharpe’s electrifying gospel-rock energy during her own performances.
“She was the greatest guitar player of all time - I mean, she literally invented the electric guitar,” Lizzo explained. While Jamie Foxx earned an Academy award for his portrayal of Ray Charles in the biopic ray, Lizzo emphasizes that her motivation isn’t about chasing accolades.”I’m not doing it because I want an Oscar…and I said this about ‘[Lizzo’s Watch Out for] the Big Grrrls’ show – I’m not doing it to win an Emmy. I want to make Sister Rosetta Tharpe a household name as big as Elvis. When people talk about rock [and] roll, it begins with her,” she declared. Tharpe’s innovative, genre-bending style laid the groundwork for icons like Chuck Berry, Little Richard, and Johnny Cash, among many others.
Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s Legacy is in good Hands with Lizzo
in a heartfelt Instagram post back in March, Lizzo revealed her long-standing dedication to bringing Tharpe’s story to the screen.”I’ve been honoring her in my music videos [and] performances, pitching her movie to people who’ve never heard of her, studying her life and reading every book that exists about her. This is my baby, my passion – because Rosetta deserves [it]. the ‘Godmother of rock [and] roll’ is in good hands, y’all,” she wrote, expressing her deep personal connection to the project.
the upcoming biopic, titled Rosetta, will mark Lizzo’s official film debut. The movie is set to explore Tharpe’s revolutionary guitar sound and her resilience in overcoming societal barriers as a Black and LGBTQ+ woman in the 1950s. Through this biopic, Lizzo is not only stepping into a new artistic arena but is also instrumental in bringing overdue recognition to a monumental music figure whose innovative sound continues to resonate and inspire across generations.
