Lizzo defends Sampling in Hip-Hop, Announces collaboration with Cardi B
On a recent episode of the Million Dollaz Worth Of Game podcast,
Lizzo
reflected on the roots of hip-hop. She highlighted the genre’s struggle for
recognition within the music industry and the ongoing legal battles surrounding
sampling.
Lizzo expressed her frustration with the restrictions placed on sampling, stating
it “turns me off.” For her, sampling is a legitimate and essential creative
practice, deeply embedded in hip-hop’s DNA.However, it is often
mischaracterized as criminal activity. She suggested that these restrictions
may have racial undertones,perhaps functioning as a means to limit Black
artistic expression.
