## A Foundation built on Faith and Friendship
The Smiths’ story began in 1987 in New York City, introduced by a mutual friend. Eight years of dating followed, solidifying a connection built on shared values and a growing affection before they said “I do.” This period of courtship allowed them to truly understand each other, laying a strong foundation for the years to come.
Today, their union has blossomed into a beautiful family, blessed wiht four children: son Najee and daughters Italia, Samaria, and Nina. The joy has expanded further with the arrival of grandchildren, as Italia has two children of her own. The Smiths’ family is a vibrant reflection of their love and commitment to one another.
## The Keys to a Lasting Marriage: It Takes Work
in a heartfelt Instagram post, Simone Smith offered a glimpse into the realities of a long-lasting marriage. “Marriage isn’t for the weak, it’s for the faithful,” she wrote. She emphasized that maintaining a strong marital bond requires consistent effort, deep love, active listening, and the wisdom to choose your battles.
But it’s more than just navigating disagreements. Simone highlighted the importance of being a friend, a prayer partner, and a constant source of encouragement for your spouse – a safe place where they can be vulnerable and grow.
She wisely pointed out that “every marriage has its own DNA,” meaning there’s no one-size-fits-all formula for success. Instead, she advocates for “grace, commitment and two people willing to grow through every season together.” It’s about adapting, evolving, and supporting each other through life’s unavoidable changes. “We’ve laughed, cried, prayed, forgiven, and grown-together,” she shared. “We did the work, and God did the rest.”
## Facing Adversity: Simone’s Battle with Cancer
The Smiths’ journey hasn’t been without its challenges. In 2004, Simone received a life-altering diagnosis: stage III chondrosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. This experience tested their resilience and deepened their bond in ways they couldn’t have imagined.
Simone recalls a seemingly innocuous moment that ultimately led to her diagnosis. While training at home, she felt a strange sensation in her leg during a leg press. “I was training downstairs in my house and doing leg presses, and as I was doing the leg press, I had the weirdest feeling in my leg,” she told First For Women. Trusting her intuition, she stopped and alerted her trainer,Naomi, who advised her to stop immediately.
That instinct to listen to her body proved crucial. Further examination revealed the cancer, and Simone faced a difficult road ahead. “eventually, my leg would have broken if I ignored my body and kept training or running,” she explained.
Simone’s health journey underscored the importance of self-awareness, proactive healthcare, and the unwavering support of loved ones. Throughout her treatment and recovery, David stood by her side, providing strength and encouragement.Their shared experience served as a powerful reminder of the vows they had taken – to support each other in sickness and in health.
