IGU Director Highlights LNG‘s Role in Sustainable Energy Future at EXPO 2025
Event Overview
During The Future of Earth and Biodiversity week, held in conjunction with Japan’s EXPO 2025 Theme Week, Mark McCrory, Director for Strategy and Advocacy at the International Gas Union (IGU), discussed global Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) market trends and it’s potential for secure and sustainable energy provision. The event, “The LNG Value Chain and the Carbon-Neutral Society”, was hosted by Osaka Gas in collaboration with the IGU’s LNG Committee.
representatives from the Japan Institute for Energy Economics, the Japan Gas Association, Cheniere, Town Gas, and other organizations also attended the event.
LNG and Global energy Security
McCrory’s remarks centered on LNG’s contribution to global energy security, emphasizing its capacity to displace coal and facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources into expanding power grids. He also highlighted the industry’s efforts to reduce emissions throughout the LNG value chain.
According to McCrory, the LNG sector is actively pursuing decarbonization strategies, including electrification, Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) integration, the adoption of alternative fuels, and the development of more efficient marine engines. He expressed confidence that LNG can provide reliable, cleaner energy while supporting a flexible and sustainable energy system.
