Logitech MX Ink Stylus for Meta Quest 3: A Game Changer for VR Creation?

Hand-on: Logitech MX Ink Stylus for Meta Quest 3 – A Game Changer for VR Creation?

I’ve spent some time exploring Logitech’s MX Ink Stylus with the Meta Quest 3, and it’s safe to say, this isn’t your average VR accessory. Logitech promises a more natural drawing and writing experience in mixed reality, so let’s find out if it lives up to the hype.

Setting up

Pairing the MX Ink is a breeze. The stylus comes solo or with a charging base (you’ll need to provide your own cable and plug). After downloading the Horizon app and selecting your Quest 3, head into your headset settings, controllers, and click ‘Pair pen’. That’s it – you’re ready to create.

How it works

The MX Ink’s digital counterpart moves seamlessly with your hand, even with quick gestures. It’s packed with thoughtful features: three buttons near the tip for easy access, and a pressure-sensitive middle button for varying line thickness.

Navigation feels intuitive. Point at menu items like a laser pointer, scroll through pages with natural hand movements, and even move menus around your space with a simple button press. The Meta button at the back works just like the one on your regular controllers.

Drawing and writing in XR

In ‘Vermillion’, the MX Ink transforms into a digital brush. It’s ligtweight (just 29 grams) and responds with haptic feedback, making it feelRemarkably like painting on canvas. Tracking is precise, whether you’re writing on a virtual flat surface or in three-dimensional space.

I also tested it in ‘Figmin XR’ for 3D drawing. Sketching lines in mid-air, creating figures, and experimenting with shapes was not only comfortable but accurate. Switching between the stylus and Quest controllers was as smooth as can be.

The verdict

The MX Ink delivers on its promises, offering easy setup and a robust, comfortable drawing experience. With up to 7 hours of battery life, it’ll keep you creating for extended sessions. Priced at $120 for the pen alone or $140 with the charging station, it’s designed for dedicated users.

Currently compatible with over 17 Quest apps, including popular creative tools like ‘Vermillion’, ‘Gravity Sketch’, and ‘Figmin XR’, the MX Ink promises to enhance your creative workflow in mixed reality.
