March 22, 2025

At the end of 2024, officials in the Community of South Estuary communes (Loire-Atlantique) announced a 20% increase⁣ in the household waste removal fee (REOM) for 2025.

The community⁤ cited⁢ a need to balance largely⁤ deficit ⁣accounts, reporting a shortfall of €530,000 at the end of 2024. New ⁢measures, including sorting bio-waste at the source, will require funding.

Public Meetings Scheduled

Two public meetings are scheduled to explain the ‌reasons‍ for the increase. The meetings will be held March 24 in Saint-Brevin-les-Pins ⁢and March 27 in Saint-Viaud.

Management of our waste is a complex societal ⁤subject that we must deal with and explain ⁢in its entirety, said Justine guihard, head ⁢of the Surroundings center for the community of communes.

The⁤ Reom covers door-to-door collection, recycling center operations, and ⁢waste treatment. Changes are scheduled to begin April 1, 2025.

changes to Waste Collection

Household waste, packaging, and voluntary‍ contribution ⁣points collection will⁤ be‌ managed by Brangeon Environnement. New collection methods will be implemented.

The most meaningful⁤ change involves⁢ household ⁣waste collection. Gray trash⁤ cans will be collected every two weeks, coinciding with packaging (yellow trash cans) collection.

Summer Exception in Saint-brevin

Officials highlight a decreased presentation rate to collection since the implementation of extended sorting instructions. Weekly collection will be maintained during the two summer months in Saint-Brevin for health⁢ reasons.

A special fee will be ‍applied to professionals, with up to three passages per week (rather of ⁣the current seven) for large waste producers.

campsites with specific needs ⁢are encouraged to consider private⁣ providers.

Focus on Bio-Waste Sorting

Sorting food ‌waste at the source, a legal obligation since Jan. 1, 2024, will be implemented over the next two years. This is expected to further reduce household waste volume, wich averaged 211.8 kilograms per‍ inhabitant in 2024.

Starting in ⁣April/May 2025, ⁢individual composters will⁢ be offered by the Environment Service, along with⁢ brief⁢ training sessions.

For ⁤residents without sufficient‍ space, proximity collection points are planned for deployment by the end ‍of 2025 and ‍into 2026.‍ A⁤ survey will be launched⁤ with ⁣professionals to⁣ assess their needs.

New Recycling Center Operator

Veolia will manage the ⁢four recycling centers starting April 1. The centers will be closed on holidays. The change in⁣ service provider will result in two days of closure, ‌March 31 and April 1, to prepare the sites and install new skips.

New sorting ⁣sectors will be introduced this year for flexible ⁤plastics, polystyrene, DIY, and garden articles.

Recycling Center Closures ‍Considered

The potential closure of one or two recycling centers is under⁢ consideration. The ⁤issue ⁤is sensitive, with municipalities having adopted motions against the idea.

We ⁣are not⁣ a huge ‍territory and four recycling centers, thatS a lot.⁤ Ther is a reflection to have, but also a ‍need for explanation because you have to realize the costs.

Dorothée Pacaud, president of Sud estuary

The goal ‌is fewer recycling centers, but better ⁢service for users. On this ‌subject, proximity is not always the most significant criterion.

Data meetings ⁤are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on ⁢March‍ 24 at the Jade star Hall in‍ Saint-Brevin-les-Pins and 6:30 p.m.on March 27 at the Lac Salle ‌in ⁤Saint-Viaud.
