New Delhi: The Lok sabha is set to engage in a discussion on ‘Operation Sindoor’ on Monday, marking a potential de-escalation in the ongoing disruptions that have plagued the Monsoon session since its commencement on July 21. The decision comes after five days of repeated interruptions, with the opposition raising several key issues.
Opposition’s Grievances
The opposition has been vocal on multiple fronts, including the special intensive revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, US President Donald Trump’s claims regarding a “ceasefire” between India and Pakistan, and the recent terror attack in Pahalgam. These issues have led to significant disruptions, with opposition members frequently entering the well of the house, holding placards.
Speaker’s Appeal for Order
Lok sabha Speaker Om Birla has repeatedly urged the opposition to allow the house to function normally. Addressing the members earlier, Birla stated, “Ther’s a way to register a protest. If you don’t want to run the Parliament…the house is adjourned till 2:00 PM today.” He also objected to the use of banners, emphasizing that the “stalemate” is detrimental to parliamentary proceedings.
“Come, there will be a discussion to end the stalemate. There will also be representatives from the government…If there is disagreement, it should be expressed as per house norms,” Birla added, extending an olive branch for constructive dialog.
Key Issues on the Table
Earlier in the day,Congress MP Manickam Tagore submitted an adjournment motion notice to discuss the “Mass Disenfranchisement of 52 Lakh voters in Bihar,” which he characterized as a “purposeful assault on the constitution and democracy by the Modi Government using the Election Commission.”
Opposition leaders have been demanding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi address both houses of Parliament and the nation on critical matters. These include the Pahalgam terror attack and the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise being conducted by the Election Commission in Bihar in anticipation of the upcoming assembly elections.
Furthermore, the opposition seeks a response from PM Modi regarding the repeated assertions by US President Donald Trump about initiating a “ceasefire” between India and Pakistan, notably in the context of ‘Operation Sindoor’.
The agreement to discuss ‘Operation Sindoor’ signals a potential pathway for the opposition to voice their concerns and for the government to respond, aiming to break the current parliamentary deadlock.
