“Lokesh Chapter 1” Surpasses ₹38 Crore at the Indian Box Office Amidst controversy
“Lokesh Chapter 1,” directed by Dominic Arun, continues to perform strongly at the Indian box office, reaching a total collection of ₹38.95 crore as of Tuesday, September 3, 2024. The film earned ₹7.35 crore on its sixth day, slightly exceeding Monday’s earnings of ₹7.2 crore, according to data from tracking website Sakhin.
The film’s daily collections show a steady climb: ₹2.7 crore on day one, ₹4 crore on day two, ₹7.6 crore on day three, ₹10.1 crore on day four, and ₹7.2 crore on day five. The Malayalam-dubbed version of the film has demonstrated especially strong viewership, with an occupancy rate of 52.41% across Indian cinemas.
Though, the film’s success has been shadowed by controversy. Wafeor Films, the production company, has acknowledged concerns raised regarding potentially offensive content within the film. Specifically, dialog spoken by a character was alleged to be hurtful to certain communities. In a statement released this week, Wafeor Films said that no offense was intended and has committed to issuing an apology and making necessary changes.
Social media campaigns have emerged, particularly focused on depictions of Bengaluru and its residents. Critics have called for the removal of specific scenes and dialogue they deem problematic. The controversy highlights the growing sensitivity surrounding portrayal and the potential for film content to spark public debate.
Industry analysts predict continued strong performance for “Lokesh Chapter 1” in the coming days, with expectations for further collections across India.
