Updated june 5, 2025
Vasiliy Lomachenko, the Ukrainian boxing star, has announced his retirement at the age of 37.He concludes his career with a professional record of 18 wins and 3 losses, including 12 knockouts. Lomachenko captured world titles in three weight divisions.
Lomachenko’s path differed from many others. After an amateur career of 396 wins and only one loss, plus two Olympic gold medals,he instantly pursued significant challenges as a professional.
In only his second professional fight in march 2014, Lomachenko faced Orlando Salido for the WBO featherweight title. Salido, who was overweight, defeated Lomachenko by split decision.
Lomachenko then secured the vacant WBO featherweight title by defeating Gary Russell Jr. by majority decision in June 2014. He then moved up to junior lightweight, where he defeated roman Martinez in five rounds in June 2016, becoming the fastest boxer to win world titles in two divisions, achieving the feat in just seven fights.
lomachenko continued his dominance, forcing Nicholas Walters, Jason Sosa, Miguel Marriaga, and Guillermo Rigondeaux to retire in their corners. Against rigondeaux, lomachenko allowed him to land only 8% of his punches before winning by TKO.
Moving to lightweight, Lomachenko defeated Jorge Linares in the 10th round in May 2018, securing his third world title in a record 12 fights. He then unified titles against Jose Pedraza and Luke Campbell but lost to Teofimo Lopez in a bid for the undisputed title. He also suffered a controversial loss to Devin Haney.

In his final fight, Lomachenko defeated George Kambosos Jr. by TKO in May 2024. He then decided to retire, citing his age and a desire to return to Ukraine.
Lomachenko’s achievements in a mere 21 professional fights are remarkable. Canelo Alvarez was still primarily fighting in Mexico at that stage of his career, and Terence Crawford had yet to win a major world title. Lomachenko’s career exemplifies greatness achieved through challenging oneself from the start.
