London is set to host the University Celestial 7s this friday in richmond, marking a notable resurgence for rugby sevens in the capital. Following the success of the London City 7s, won by Harlequins, the university Celestial 7s will take place at Richmond Athletic Ground.
Organizer Joe Byrnes highlighted the scale of the event. he noted that the tournament will showcase nearly 1,000 of the UK’s most talented rugby players.
Universities such as Exeter, Bath, Durham, Nottingham, and Edinburgh are slated to compete in the tournament, which runs from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
Last year’s event, held at Rosslyn Park, saw several players scouted for Great Britain’s sevens team. The event aims to boost the profile of rugby sevens in London.
The popularity of the format was recently demonstrated by the London City 7s event, which drew thousands and provided a boost to businesses.
Byrnes hopes to replicate this success, with tickets available online. The Rosslyn Park National Schools 7s also remains a popular event.
7s a Premiership Warm-Up
According to Byrnes, university rugby plays a crucial role in developing talent for higher levels of competition. He pointed to the Premiership final between Bath and Leicester as an example.
He noted that Bath’s Will Muir was discovered at a similar event, while leicester’s Freddie Steward played university rugby for Loughborough. The event offers a chance to see the next generation of players.
“Food, drink, music and sevens – a timeless Friday formula for fun,” byrnes said.
