London, UK – Major London airports, including Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted, experienced significant disruptions on Wednesday afternoon due to a technical failure at the Swanwick air traffic control centre in Southampton. The incident, which began around 3 PM Spanish peninsular time, led to widespread flight cancellations and delays, impacting thousands of passengers.
Airspace Gradually Resumes Operations Amidst Lingering Chaos
By approximately 6 PM Spanish peninsular time, the primary British airports began a gradual resumption of their activities. Though, the British transport minister, Heidi Alexander, cautioned that while systems had been “restored,” ongoing ”disruption” was still anticipated. Passengers were strongly advised to verify their flight statuses directly with their respective airlines.
The National Air Traffic Services (NATS) identified the root cause of the failure as a technical problem within the Swanwick control center. This malfunction resulted in the cancellation of all flights originating from or destined for airports such as Gatwick, Manchester, Edinburgh, and Birmingham.
“We will continue working with the airlines and with the airport passengers to minimize the disruption caused,” stated air authorities in their latest public announcement, emphasizing the ongoing efforts to manage the fallout from the incident.
Ryanair Demands Resignation, Calls for Self-reliant Examination
The latest technical failure has drawn sharp criticism from industry leaders. Neal McMahon, ryanair’s Director of Operations, directly called for the resignation of Martin Rolfe, head of the NATS control Center. “It is scandalous that passengers are again affected with delays and disruptions because of the continuous poor management of Martin Rolfe in front of nats,” McMahon stated, highlighting the impact on thousands of travelers. ”It is clear that no lesson has been learned,” he added, referencing previous similar incidents.
Echoing these sentiments,Ed Davey, leader of the Democratic Liberal Party, demanded an independent goverment investigation into the cause of the problem. “It is completely unacceptable that, after two years ago we suffered a serious disruption, the control of air traffic has once again suffered a technical failure,” Davey remarked. He stressed that mere explanations were insufficient for the thousands of families whose travel plans had been disrupted.
Significant Flight Cancellations Reported
By 6:30 PM Spanish peninsular time, the aviation analytics company Cirium reported at least 45 departure flights and 35 arrivals had been canceled across the United Kingdom. Heathrow Airport in London bore the brunt of the cancellations, with 16 take-offs and 7 landings suspended.
many passengers found themselves stranded on aircraft or in terminals for extended periods, with limited information provided about the unfolding situation. The disruptions, occurring at the start of the holiday period for many, have significantly altered travel plans and caused considerable inconvenience.
