London Knights Capture Memorial Cup Title with Dominant Performance

RIMOUSKI, Quebec – The London Knights are the 2024 Memorial Cup champions. Philadelphia Flyers prospect Denver Barkey led the charge with two second-period goals as the Knights defeated the Medicine Hat Tigers 4-1 on Saturday.
Jacob Julien and Easton Cowan also scored for London. Goalie Austin Elliott stopped 31 shots, securing the victory for the Ontario Hockey League champions. This marks the Knights’ third memorial Cup title,adding to their wins in 2005 and 2016. They are owned by former NHL players Dale and Mark Hunter, along with Basil McRae. Dale Hunter also serves as president and coach, while Mark Hunter is the general manager.
The Knights’ road to the championship included a 5-2 semifinal victory against Moncton, avenging an earlier 3-1 loss to Medicine Hat in round-robin play. This win gives Dale Hunter his third title, tying Don Hay’s record for most memorial Cup wins as a coach.
Barkey, London’s captain, expressed his excitement. “This is something I’ll never forget,” Barkey said.”We worked all year toward this, and this is the tightest team I’ve ever played on. To be able to do it with these guys. It’s so surreal. Going to remember this for life.”
Medicine Hat’s Gavin McKenna broke Elliott’s shutout bid in the third period. Harrison Meneghin made 20 saves for the Tigers, who previously won the Memorial Cup in 1987 and 1988.
Tigers coach Willie Desjardins acknowledged the strength of their opponent. “They cared, they tried,” Desjardins said. “Coming in, we only have one problem, that’s London’s a really good hockey team. It wasn’t that we didn’t want it, wasn’t that we didn’t try. They’re just a good team.”
Julien initiated the scoring midway through the first period. Cowan, a Toronto first-round pick, and Barkey then scored within a 1:40 span early in the second. Barkey’s power-play goal with 7:52 remaining in the second period extended london’s lead to 4-0.
