London, Newcastle, and Surrey see demonstrations and counter-demonstrations, with authorities implementing measures to prevent disorder.
Protests concerning migrant accommodation have taken place across the UK, with important demonstrations in london and Newcastle, and a recent incident in Surrey leading to arrests. Police have imposed strict conditions on assemblies to ensure public safety and minimize disruption.
London Protests See Divided Demonstrations
In London, two distinct protest areas have been established on Lever Street, near the junction with Central street. The demonstrations are permitted to begin no earlier than 12 pm and must conclude by 4 pm.
Chief Superintendent Clair Haynes, overseeing the police operation, stated, ”We have been in discussions with the organisers of both protests in recent days, building on the ongoing engagement between local officers, community groups and partners.” she acknowledged the strongly held views on all sides and assured that officers would police “without fear or favour, ensuring those exercising their right to protest can do so safely, but intervening at the first sign of actions that cross the line into criminality.”
The Public Order Act has been invoked to implement conditions aimed at preventing serious disorder and minimizing disruption to local residents and businesses. “Those conditions identify two distinct protest areas where the protests must take place, meaning the groups will be separated but still within sight and sound of each other,” Haynes added.
Newcastle gears Up for Demonstrations and Counter-Protests
newcastle is also set to host protests, with online advertisements promoting a “for our children, for our future” demonstration outside The New Bridge Hotel. In response, Stand Up To racism has organized a counter-protest at the nearby Laing Art Gallery, titled “stop the far right and fascists in Newcastle.”
The organizers of the counter-protest issued a statement condemning the far-right’s intentions, saying, “Yet again far-right and fascist thugs are intent on bringing their message of hate to Newcastle. They aim to build on years of Islamophobia, anti-migrant sentiment and scapegoating.” They highlighted recent incidents of intimidation and violence against refugees, migrants, and asylum seekers in Epping and elsewhere.
“Newcastle, like the rest of the North East, has a well-earned reputation for unity in the face of those who seek to divide us. Whatever problems we face, racism and division are not the answer,” the statement concluded. Northumbria Police have been approached for comment regarding their preparations.
Surrey Incident Leads to Arrests
In Spelthorne, Surrey, a protest outside the Stanwell Hotel on Friday evening saw approximately 100 attendees. Surrey Police reported that a packet of lit firelighters was thrown at officers during the demonstration. A man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of attempted arson, and investigations are ongoing to identify another suspect.
Earlier on Thursday evening, officers arrested a man in connection with a protest at the same location on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder and aggravated trespass.
The series of events underscores the heightened tensions surrounding the issue of migrant accommodation and the challenges faced by law enforcement in managing public demonstrations.
