London is set to host the first-ever team time trial of the Tour de France Femmes in 2027, bringing an estimated £12 million economic boost to the city as part of the UK’s hosting of the Grand Départs for both the men’s and women’s races.
The third stage of the 2027 Tour de France Femmes will take place in London, featuring an 18-kilometre circuit that will pass landmarks including the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, and Tower Bridge, before finishing on The Mall. The route is expected to be finalised later this year.
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan welcomed the announcement, stating that the event would showcase London as a cycling city and inspire the next generation of women cyclists. He noted that London recorded 1.5 million bike trips per day in the previous year, underscoring the city’s existing cycling culture.
Historic Significance of the 2027 Grand Départs
The UK last hosted a Grand Depart in 2014, when stages in Yorkshire attracted large crowds before the peloton continued into France. Prior to that, the 2007 Tour de France began with an individual time trial in London, followed by a stage to Canterbury.
Potential Record Attendance and Wider Sporting Context
Organisers have indicated that the London stage of the Tour de France Femmes could become the most-attended women’s sporting event ever held in Britain. The race forms part of a broader programme of international sport coming to London, including the return of NBA games to the O2 Arena, and upcoming events such as the Pro Climbing League, Pro Padel Tour, and World Team Table Tennis Championship Finals.
Legacy and Legacy Goals
Paul Bush, managing director of Grand Depart GB 2027, described the announcement of the opening stages and London’s role in hosting the inaugural women’s team time trial as a key milestone in the build-up to 2027. He highlighted the contrast between the challenging terrain of Yorkshire and the Peak District and the urban spectacle of racing through central London.
British Cycling’s chief executive, Jon Dutton, said the event represented a significant opportunity to grow participation in women’s cycling through the organisation’s ‘Joy’ programme, which aims to encourage more girls and women to take up cycling and promote active lifestyles across communities in Great Britain.
