London has unveiled a new two-acre garden in Regent’s Park dedicated to the late Queen Elizabeth II, offering the public a tranquil space that reflects her life, public service, and love of horticulture. The Queen Elizabeth II Garden officially opened to visitors on April 27, 2026, coinciding with what would have been the monarch’s 100th birthday.

Design Reflects the Queen’s Life and Legacy

The garden, developed over more than two years, transforms a former disused plant nursery into a commemorative landscape designed to honor Elizabeth II’s roles as a sovereign, mother, wife, and woman. Landscape designer Katharine Erme, who contributed to the project, described the space as “imbued with meaning,” with every element carefully chosen to symbolize different aspects of the Queen’s life.

A central axis runs through the garden toward a rondel, representing the late monarch’s “unwavering service and duty,” according to Erme. Other sections of the garden are intended to evoke her personal relationships and interests, including her well-documented passion for gardening. The design also includes a woodland walk inspired by a secluded path in the gardens of Buckingham Palace, a space the Queen was reported to enjoy.

Horticultural Choices Pay Tribute to the Queen’s Favorites

Matthew Pottage, head of horticulture at the Royal Parks, said the plant selections were influenced by the Queen’s personal preferences and associations with royal residences. Among the featured flora are lily of the valley, one of her favorite flowers, as well as agapanthus varieties linked to royal properties. Magnolias, another of Elizabeth II’s preferred flowering trees, are also prominently included.

The garden’s design prioritizes biodiversity and climate resilience, reflecting modern horticultural practices. The Royal Parks team conducted planting trials to assess how different soil compositions affected plant growth and durability, ensuring the garden can thrive amid changing environmental conditions. Interconnected water channels, or swales, help manage rainwater flow, reducing the need for irrigation while creating dynamic wet and dry habitats across seasons.

A Haven for Wildlife in Central London

Beyond its commemorative purpose, the garden serves as a refuge for urban wildlife. A former water storage tower on the site has been repurposed with swift nesting boxes and bat refuges integrated into its roof, and brickwork. The project aligns with broader efforts to enhance biodiversity in London’s green spaces, particularly in Regent’s Park, where the garden is surrounded by diverse habitats.

Matthew Halsall, the landscape architect who managed the project, emphasized the site’s ecological potential. “It’s right in the heart of Regent’s Park, surrounded by many different habitat types, and therefore an important project in terms of wildlife-habitat reclamation,” he said.

Accessibility and Public Engagement

The garden is located near the Broad Walk in Regent’s Park, with four new entrances providing access, including one on Chester Road and another adjacent to the park’s Espresso Bar. The Royal Parks has implemented managed entry to ensure a comfortable experience for visitors, with current opening hours set from 9 a.m. To 8 p.m.

The site was previously used as a plant nursery supplying shrubs and flowers for London’s eight Royal Parks. After the opening of the Hyde Park Nursery in 2018, the Regent’s Park location was decommissioned, allowing the two-acre space to be repurposed as public green space.

Part of a Broader Commemoration

The Queen Elizabeth II Garden is one of several tributes marking the late monarch’s centenary. A separate UK National Memorial to Elizabeth II is planned for St James’s Park, near Buckingham Palace. The Regent’s Park garden, however, offers an immediate and immersive experience for the public, blending remembrance with natural beauty.

The Princess Royal, Anne, officially opened the garden last week in a ceremony attended by Dr. Linda Yeuh, chair of The Royal Parks. The event underscored the garden’s dual role as both a personal tribute and a public space for reflection and enjoyment.

Climate-Adaptive Design for the Future

The garden’s layout is specifically designed to adapt to evolving climate conditions, including warmer, wetter winters and hotter, drier summers. The swales and water management systems ensure the space remains vibrant year-round while supporting local ecosystems. This forward-looking approach reflects the Royal Parks’ commitment to sustainable urban green spaces.

As London continues to expand its network of memorial gardens and public parks, the Queen Elizabeth II Garden stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of a monarch whose life was deeply intertwined with the nation’s history and natural landscapes.
