Researchers from the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and other institutions have identified a link between loneliness and the biological process of wound healing. The study found that patients with chronic leg and foot wounds who experience loneliness show an increased expression of pro-inflammatory genes, which can hinder the body’s ability to heal.
The findings, published in the journal Advances in Skin & Wound Care, indicate that the high-loneliness group exhibited higher expression of these genes compared to the low-loneliness group. This biological response is critical because pro-inflammatory genes are designed to activate during injury or illness but must be deactivated for successful healing to occur.
The Impact of Pro-Inflammatory Genes
When pro-inflammatory genes remain active instead of turning off, wounds may fail to heal properly. This research specifically focused on patients living with chronic wounds that have remained open for more than four weeks.
Dr. Teresa Kelechi, the lead author of the study and associate dean for research at the MUSC College of Nursing, noted that some patients in her wound clinic healed more slowly despite meeting traditional health criteria. According to Kelechi, these patients had clean wounds, adequate exposure to natural light, and good nutrition.

Kelechi and her collaborator, Dr. Laurie Theeke of George Washington University, suspected that loneliness was the missing factor affecting these recovery rates. Theeke has spent more than 15 years researching the connections between loneliness and overall health.

The research suggests that loneliness triggers a physiological stress response. Theeke explained that when individuals experience loneliness, they may enter a fight-or-flight response
