Kitchen Dentist: Q&A with Dental Hygienist Sarah Miller

NewsDirect3.com: This week, Suffolk County authorities uncovered a disturbing case of an unlicensed dental practice⁢ operating out of a home kitchen. To shed some light on‍ the dangers of such illegal ‌operations,we spoke with Sarah Miller,a registered dental hygienist with over 10 years of experience.

NewsDirect3.com: Ms. Miller, how⁤ serious are the health risks associated with receiving ⁣dental treatment from an unlicensed practicioner?

Sarah Miller: The consequences can be incredibly serious. Unlicensed individuals lack the necessary training and skills to perform dental procedures safely. ⁣ Without proper sterilization‍ techniques, the risk of infection is extremely high. These infections ‍can⁢ range from minor‍ abscesses to life-threatening systemic ⁣infections.

NewsDirect3.com: What ‌are some specific risks⁢ associated with procedures like fillings⁤ and extractions⁣ being⁤ performed in an unsanitary habitat?

Sarah Miller: Fillings involve placing materials directly ‌into⁣ the tooth, a sensitive area prone to bacterial contamination. If ⁤instruments and materials aren’t properly sterilized, bacteria⁣ can be introduced, leading to painful infections. Extractions, even simpler ones, can lead to ‌severe ⁤bleeding and complications if ‌not performed by⁤ a trained professional in a sterile environment.

NewsDirect3.com: ‍ What advice would you give to individuals ‌who might be tempted to seek low-cost dental care from unlicensed ‌providers?

Sarah ⁤Miller: It’s crucial to prioritize your health and safety. Seeking treatment from‍ an unlicensed provider is extremely risky.⁢ Dental⁤ care should ‍always be provided by qualified⁤ professionals in a regulated setting. Ther are often community health centers and other resources available for those facing financial hardship, so please reach out for⁤ help.

NewsDirect3.com: ⁤ Thank ⁤you, Ms.⁢ Miller, for‌ sharing your expertise and ⁤highlighting these critical concerns.
