Marrakesh, Morocco – Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman has been named the 2024 African Player of the Year, capping off a stellar season with Italian club Atalanta.The award was presented at the Confederation of African Football (CAF) ceremony held in Marrakesh on monday.
lookman edged out a competitive field that included Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi of Paris Saint-Germain, Guinean striker Serhou Guirassy of Borussia Dortmund, Brighton’s Ivorian winger Simon Adingra, and South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams of Mamelodi Sundowns.
Lookman’s triumph comes on the heels of his instrumental role in leading Atalanta to the UEFA Europa League title, marking the italian club’s first continental trophy in 61 years. His exceptional performances throughout the season earned him widespread recognition and cemented his place among Africa’s elite footballers.This marks the second consecutive year that Nigeria has claimed the prestigious award. last year, Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, currently on loan to Turkish club Galatasaray, was crowned the African Player of the Year. Lookman joins a distinguished list of Nigerian winners,including legends like Rashidi Yekini,Victor Ikpeba,Nwankwo Kanu,and emmanuel Amunike.
In a night of celebration for African football, South African goalkeeper Ronwen Williams emerged as a double winner, claiming both the Best Goalkeeper and Best Local Player awards. Egyptian giants Al Ahly were named the Best Football Team, beating out rivals Zamalek and other contenders like Mamelodi Sundowns. Al Ahly’s impressive trophy haul this season, including the CAF Champions League, CAF Confederation Cup, and the Egyptian Super Cup, solidified their position as one of africa’s most dominant clubs.
The CAF Awards ceremony also saw zambian star Barbara Banda named the Best Female Player, while Ivorian coach Emers Faye was recognized as the Best Coach.
