Lookman Crowned African Footballer of the Year
Marrakech,Morocco – nigerian striker Ademola Lookman has been named the 2024 African Footballer of the Year,capping off a remarkable season for the Atalanta star. The award was presented at a glittering ceremony hosted by the Confederation of african Football (CAF) in Marrakech.
Lookman, 27, beat out stiff competition from Paris St. Germain’s Achraf Hakimi, Borussia Dortmund’s Sadio Mané, Brighton’s Simon Adingra, and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams to claim the prestigious title.
“This award is a blessing,” Lookman said in his acceptance speech. “To be recognized as the best player in Africa is something amazing. Four years ago, my career was at a low point, but now I’m here as the best player in Africa. Never let your setbacks stop you from chasing your dreams.”
Lookman’s stellar performance for both club and country earned him the recognition. He played a pivotal role in Nigeria’s run to the final of the African cup of Nations in February, scoring three crucial goals. In May, he cemented his status as a global star by netting a hat-trick to lead Atalanta to a 3-0 victory over Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa league final.
The London-born forward enjoyed a prolific season with Atalanta, scoring 17 goals in all competitions last year. He has already notched 11 goals this season,showcasing his continued dominance in front of goal.
Lookman’s victory marks a importent moment for Nigerian football and highlights the growing talent pool emerging from the continent.
