Lord Blunkett Calls for Tube Safety Reforms After Injury
Lord David Blunkett has urged Transport for London (TfL) to reform Tube safety protocols following a serious accident. The blind former home secretary fell into the gap between a train and the platform last month, resulting in significant injuries.
At 77 years old, Blunkett described the experience as terrifying. He recalled, “As I took a step to get onto the tube train, I suddenly felt both my feet disappearing down the gap.” He was propelled forward into the carriage and ended up face down on the floor.
Blunkett criticized London’s underground stations, stating they pose serious risks for blind people. He remarked, “Some of our platforms are death traps. The gap between the walkway and train is huge and they are unsafe for everyone, particularly for blind people.”
He called for immediate changes, emphasizing the need for more than just the common warning to “mind the gap.” Blunkett questioned how many others had suffered injuries due to this design flaw and stated, “We need action now to avoid preventable injury or worse.”
In response to the incident, TfL expressed regret over Blunkett’s injury. He plans to meet with TfL next week to discuss potential safety improvements.
