Ralph Bakshi’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ Animated Film: A Remastered Look
updated June 21, 2025
Ralph Bakshi’s 1978 animated adaptation of “The Lord of the Rings” achieved considerable box-office success, earning over $32 million against its production costs. While initial critical reception was mixed, and the film only covered “The Fellowship of the Ring” and part of “The Two Towers,” it has since garnered a devoted following and is now considered a cult classic.
The animated Lord of the Rings film employs a mix of cel animation and rotoscoping, where live-action footage is traced to create realistic movement. Peter Jackson has noted that Bakshi’s animated film served as a significant inspiration for his live-action adaptation.
The Blu-ray edition of the remastered animated movie features 1080p HD resolution, a 16 x 9 aspect ratio (1.85:1), Dolby TrueHD English 5.1 Surround Sound, Dolby Digital English 5.1, French 1.0 / Spanish 2.0, and subtitles in English, Spanish, and French. The remaster includes interviews with Ralph Bakshi titled: “Forging Through the Darkness: The Ralph Bakshi Vision for The Lord of the Rings.”
Even though a direct sequel never materialized, animated versions of “The Hobbit” and “The Return of the King” were produced as made-for-TV musicals around the same time. Deluxe editions of both are available on DVD.

More recently, “The War of the Rohirrim,” an anime set centuries before Jackson’s films, was released. Despite mixed reviews, its animation is noteworthy.
