LordeS ‘Man of the Year’ Ignited Gender Identity Exploration
Updated June 02, 2025
Singer Lorde has revealed that attending the GQ ‘Man Of The Year’ awards in 2023 played a meaningful role in her exploration of gender identity. This revelation comes alongside the release of her new song, ‘Man Of The Year,’ from her upcoming album, ‘Virgin.’
The New Zealand native has been increasingly open about her evolving understanding of gender. She told Rolling Stone that the opening line of her new album’s first track—”Some days I’m a woman/Some days I’m a man”—mirrors her current outlook on gender fluidity.
According to Lorde, the song ‘Man of the Year’ reflects how her gender felt at a particular moment. The inspiration struck when she tried on men’s jeans and shared a photo wiht producer Jim-E Stack. Stack encouraged her to represent that version of herself in her music. She recently told Triple J that the GQ party triggered a gender revelation. Wearing a form-fitting green dress to the event, the ”Royals” singer felt disconnected from herself, later posting on Instagram: “some days I’m a woman, some days I’m a man.”
The next day, Lorde and Stack, inspired by the previous night’s experience, began working on a song about “how I’m the Man of the Year for me.”

Rahim Redcar, formerly known as Christine & The Queens, accused Lorde of copying his artistic expression without proper credit.
