A chilling case has unfolded in italy, with a mother and daughter-in-law arrested in connection with the murder and dismemberment of a man. The case, marked by a calculated attempt at concealment and a tragic breakdown leading to confession, has shocked the small town of Gemona and drawn the attention of criminologists.
A Calculated Crime and a failed Deception
Authorities allege that Freda Monsalvo, 65, instigated the murder of her son, Daniele Monsalvo, 43, while her daughter-in-law, Isabella Venier, 32, carried it out. Venier confessed to police, detailing a horrifying sequence of events. She reportedly administered insulin and a tranquilliser to Daniele before ending his life.
“I took care of the dismemberment myself,” she told police. “I used a hacksaw and a sheet to hold the blood. I dissected him into three pieces.”
Venier then meticulously wrapped the remains, placing them inside a plastic barrel and covering them with lime – a desperate attempt to accelerate decomposition and eliminate evidence. The plan was to create the illusion that Daniele had followed through on his stated intention to relocate to South America, leaving behind his girlfriend and their young daughter.
However, the carefully constructed facade crumbled when Venier’s daughter-in-law, already struggling with post-natal depression, confessed everything to authorities.
Confessions and Legal Proceedings
Isabella Venier is currently in custody, facing charges of murder and concealing a body. Freda Monsalvo is accused of instigation to murder.
“My client has made a full confession to the prosecutor,” stated Giovanni De nardo,Venier’s lawyer,to Italy’s national news agency,Ansa. “She was lucid and aware during her confession, explaining in detail exactly what prompted her to act,her motives.” A psychiatric evaluation for Venier has been requested.
The couple’s baby is now under the care of social services in Gemona. Federica Tosel, Monsalvo’s lawyer, described her client as “in a state of great difficulty,” adding, “She has been very confused and not able to face up to what happened.”
Judges, lawyers, and forensic experts are scheduled to meet on Tuesday to determine the timing of a post-mortem examination. A trial date has not yet been set.
A Rare and Disturbing Case
British criminologist David Wilson described the case as exceptionally unusual. “In Western countries, only 10 per cent of people who kill are female,” he explained. “This case is a filicide, meaning a parent who kills a child, which is unusual. Among those cases, it is indeed mostly parents killing young children.Killing a grown-up child is even more unusual.”
Wilson highlighted the particularly gruesome nature of the body’s disposal. While the use of insulin and tranquillisers aligns with typical methods employed by female perpetrators, the dismemberment represents a meaningful escalation.
“The insulin, the tranquilliser – that is very typical of how women commit murder,” he said. “But to chop up the body, that is a further stage and very unusual. It usually happens with someone who has medical training because it is actually very difficult to cut up a body. Her training as a nurse would also have given her the psychological robustness to do it.”
The case raises disturbing questions about the dynamics within the family and the motivations behind this horrific act. As investigations continue, the small town of Gemona is left grappling with the shocking reality of a crime that has shattered it’s peace. The Telegraph, London
