The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is in full swing, and amidst the vibrant celebrations, a beloved musical group is marking a significant milestone. Agrupación Lírico Musical Los Fregolinos is celebrating its 65th anniversary as a cornerstone of the annual festivities, which this year are themed “Los Ritmos Latinos.”

Founded in October 1961 by a group of friends with a passion for lyrical and beautiful singing, Los Fregolinos have been a continuous presence in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival since 1962. The group’s name, inspired by the Salon Frégoli, reflects its early aesthetic – a Pierrot-inspired fantasy costume. Jorge Garabote served as its first president, and the group is currently led by Cristóbal Luis Flores.

More than just a performance group, Los Fregolinos have become synonymous with elegance and color within the “best Carnival in the world,” as it’s often called. Their performances are distinguished by the quality of their musical arrangements and the unique style of their vocalists and musicians, demonstrating a refined taste and high level of skill. The group’s longevity speaks to its consistent ability to evolve while maintaining its core artistic identity.

Their journey hasn’t been confined to Tenerife. In 1992, coinciding with the 5th Centenary of the Discovery of America, Los Fregolinos embarked on a tour to Venezuela, often referred to as the “Octava Isla” (Eighth Island) by Canarians. They performed in Caracas at the Hogar Canario and Centro Gallego, and in Valencia, bringing a taste of home to the large Canarian diaspora.

Throughout their history, Los Fregolinos have maintained a commitment to musical diversity. Beyond their Carnival performances, they incorporate an extensive repertoire of Christmas carols and habaneras into their annual presentations. The group has seen a succession of directors, including Juan Estany Rius, Francisco Padrón Correa, Jesús Álvaro Fariña Adán, Agustín Ramos Ramos, Carlos Afonso Cedres, Felipe Neri Gil Marrero, and currently, Juan Antonio Domínguez Martín.

The group has also served as a launching pad for numerous lyrical singers. Early pioneers like Marco Redondo, Luis Quiros, Carlos Munguía, and Pablo Vidal, along with soprano Sara Khouri, laid the foundation for a new generation of celebrated artists. This includes Cristóbal Viña, Jorge León, Pedro Lavirgen, Candelaria González, Pedro Gilabert, Raquel Hernández, Luis Luiri, Augusto Brito, Noelia Guidi, Celso Albelo, Fernando García Campero, and Juan Antonio Martín, among others.

For the 2026 Carnival, Los Fregolinos have welcomed tenor Javier Palacios to their ranks. Palacios brings with him a distinguished career, having performed alongside renowned artists such as Montserrat Caballé and Plácido Domingo. The group’s chorus currently comprises 28 singers, accompanied by a 15-member wind and percussion orchestra during Carnival and their Christmas concert. They also collaborate with the pulso y púas group Trémolo for their habaneras performances.

Los Fregolinos’ impact extends beyond the stage. The group is known for its consistent social contributions, regularly collaborating with charitable organizations and making donations to local soup kitchens. This commitment to community service underscores their role as a cultural institution deeply rooted in the fabric of Tenerife.

The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife 2026 officially began on January 16th and will continue through February 22nd. Los Fregolinos’ performance on February 10th at the Círculo de la amistad XII de Enero is a key event in the Carnival program, offering audiences a chance to witness a legacy of musical excellence and cultural pride.

As Los Fregolinos celebrate 65 years, their story is a testament to the enduring power of music, community, and the vibrant spirit of the Tenerife Carnival. Their continued presence ensures that the traditions of lyrical music and colorful spectacle will continue to thrive for generations to come.
