Lost contact with Jenin.. How did Israel kill “Abu Shuja” and his companions?

August 30, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

On Thursday morning, the Israeli army announced the killing of five Palestinians “inside a mosque” in the Noor Shams camp near Tulkaram in the northern occupied West Bank, among them Abu Souza, the “commander of the Tulkaram Brigade,” which includes members of several factions.

The Israeli army said in a statement: “During an operation conducted by special police units and members of the army and after an exchange of fire, members of the police unit killed five Palestinians”.

He also claimed that five fighters were “hiding inside a mosque” in Noor Shams camp.

“Among the militants who were eliminated was Muhammad Jaber, alias Abu Souza, commander of the camp’s Tulkam battalion,” he added.

He claimed that “Abu Souza” was involved in the operation, which killed an Israeli in a shootout last June.

The Israeli army also reported the arrest of a Palestinian, without naming him.

“During the battle, a soldier of the special police unit was slightly injured and was taken to a hospital for treatment,” he added.

For its part, the Islamic Jihad movement mourned “Abu Shuja, the commander of the Tulkaram Battalion attached to the Al-Quds Brigade, who was martyred along with others while confronting the occupying forces in the Tulkaram camp.”

In this context, Arab TV correspondent Amid Shehadeh from Jenin said that the five youths whose killings were announced moved from Noor Shams camp and to Tulkarm camp and barricaded themselves in two adjacent areas, where the Israeli army attacked with its special forces. And shoulder-fired missiles at the house where Abbu lived.

The killing of Abu Shuja and his companion coincided with an armed Israeli confrontation with their remaining three companions in the nearby area, resulting in their martyrdom.

Our correspondent added that when the occupying forces attacked the Noor Shams camp, they arrested one of the leaders of Tulkarm Battalion, Muhammad Qassas, after injuring him and then killing five youths, including the battalion commander, Abu Souza.

In the wake of attacks by Israeli forces in the West Bank, the Palestinian telecommunications company and Oredu have announced communication and internet shutdowns in the Jenin governorate, for the second day in a row due to the ongoing aggression.

They spoke in two separate statements about the loss of main and backup routes feeding Jenin Governorate’s communications network due to the occupation’s widespread destruction of infrastructure.

They indicated that technical personnel have been trying to reach the affected areas since yesterday, but the situation on the ground prevented it.

In the early hours of Wednesday, the Israeli army, under heavy air cover, launched an operation in Tulkarem and Jenin governorates and al-Fara camp near Tubas before withdrawing from the latter camp.

The Palestinian death toll rose to 18 and dozens wounded in the ongoing operation, which is believed to be the “largest” since Operation Defensive Shield in 2002, according to the official Palestinian news agency, Wafa.

The occupation army has stepped up its operations in the West Bank since the Israeli invasion of the Gaza Strip began last October.
