Lost in the Spotlight: Arcangel’s Quest for Redemption at Córdoba CF

Lost in the Spotlight: Arcangel’s Quest for Redemption at Córdoba CF

November 7, 2024 Catherine Williams Business

Córdoba / Córdoba CF is celebrating Arkangel’s 31st birthday on Thursday 7 November. On this day, Fortress Blanquiverde hosted its first match against Recreativo de Huelva, marking the beginning of a new era in the city’s football history. Last July, the club signed a formal lease agreement, freeing itself from unstable facility occupancy, but still has not come up with a solution to chronic problems that have accumulated over its 30-year history.

Spectators who watched the match between Córdoba CF and Recreativo de Huelva would not have imagined that 30 years later, the stadium still retains the appearance of an unfinished construction site. There are still significant flaws in the stadium that hinder Córdoba CF’s viewing potential.

From an onlooker’s perspective, Arkhangel still presents an undesirable sight on the A-4 highway, its façade riddled with scaffolding and supports. To address this unsavory image, Córdoba City Hall announced a few months ago that it had allocated funds in the 2025 budget to finish the exterior of Arcangel. The project will also be supported with public funding, with Córdoba CF securing the lease for the facility in July.

But Arkhangel’s external appearance is not the club’s most pressing problem. Most notably, the Tribuna stands are the only legacy from the previous stadium, and are riddled with a number of defects that lead to fan dissatisfaction season after season. Limited and outdated access roads, frequent water leaks during bad weather, and unattended toilets are common complaints among users.

Arkangel, which boasts a 31-year history while watching Cordoba matches, has seen more changes internally. Promotion to La Liga in 2014 forced the club, then led by Carlos Gonzalez, to make a series of improvements and refurbishments to the main stadium and outdated stands. All of these changes were aimed at meeting La Liga’s requirements, but the body is now seriously considering complying with the minimum quality standards for its teams’ stadiums, with many of the requirements set to change after the CCF’s grace period for the first year of professional football’s return. will have to meet.

The club has implemented some adjustments this summer, and the recent visit of the Spanish national team has contributed to the improved appearance of Arcangel. New LED lighting was installed to compensate for inadequate lighting caused by the outdated power system. However, this side still does not meet the requirements of La Liga, but at least it has been patched up.

Meanwhile, Córdoba’s faithful fans are enduring the difficulties they are experiencing at the stadium where they played their first official match 31 years ago. There are hopes for the development to be completed within a few years. The sight of a remnant of those days, the unkempt railings sticking out of the non-existent link between Tribuna and Fondo Sur, has not improved much with time. These images of the past have become familiar to Córdoba CF season ticket holders, and now that the club has been recognized as the legal user of the stadium, it is hoped that old promises will be put into action and the football viewing experience at Arcangel will improve. This is to make viewing more enjoyable and, most importantly, safer for all fans.
