Lost Las Vegas Toucan ‘Sam’ Rescued After Months on the Run

Lost Las Vegas Toucan ‘Sam’ Rescued After Months on the Run

February 26, 2026 Ahmed Hassan - World News Editor World

LAS VEGAS – A toucan that captivated the city of Las Vegas with its months-long appearance in the desert landscape has been rescued, authorities said Wednesday. The bird, known locally as “Sam,” was found after flying into a garage in the northwest of the city.

The rescue was carried out by the SouthWest Exotic Avian Rescue (SWEAR), a local organization dedicated to the care of exotic birds. “We’ve all just been so worried about him,” said Skye Marsh, the president and co-founder of SWEAR. “It’s a relief.”

Sam’s presence in Las Vegas dates back to November, raising concerns among bird experts and enthusiasts about the animal’s ability to survive in the harsh desert climate. Toucans are native to the humid rainforests of Central and South America, and the drastic weather changes of Nevada posed a significant threat to the bird’s health.

According to Marsh, Sam’s rescue unfolded when he unexpectedly flew into a homeowner’s garage. Recognizing the bird from news reports, the homeowners quickly contacted SWEAR, securing Sam and preventing his escape. “The little stinker decided it was time for help, and he flew into someone’s garage,” Marsh told the Associated Press.

Following his capture, Sam was immediately taken to a local veterinarian for a thorough examination. Initial assessments revealed signs of “wear and tear,” including dehydrated skin and a chipped beak, but Marsh indicated that the bird’s overall condition appeared stable. The veterinarian administered fluids and collected blood samples for further analysis.

SWEAR had been proactively attempting to aid Sam prior to his capture, placing healthier toucan food around a cage in an effort to attract him. Marsh noted that the improved diet appeared to have a positive impact on Sam’s health, evidenced by changes in his droppings.

The circumstances surrounding Sam’s original escape remain unclear. His previous owners had posted on social media regarding his disappearance from his cage in November, but have not yet come forward to claim him, according to SWEAR.

Sam will now be placed in quarantine at a staff member’s home for a period of 30 to 45 days. This precautionary measure is intended to ensure he is free of bird flu, a highly contagious disease that could pose a risk to other birds at the rescue facility.

The case highlights the challenges faced by exotic animals that escape or are released into non-native environments. Marsh emphasized the dangers of providing inappropriate care to these birds, noting that even something as simple as offering tap water can be fatal due to the potential for iron buildup in their systems.

The rescue of Sam has resonated with the Las Vegas community, who followed his story with concern, and hope. His survival for several months in the desert environment is considered remarkable, given the inherent difficulties faced by a tropical bird in such a climate. While his future remains uncertain, Sam is now receiving the care he needs to recover and adjust to a more stable environment.

The incident also serves as a reminder of the responsibilities associated with owning exotic pets. Experts caution that these animals require specialized care and a suitable habitat to thrive, and that their release into the wild can have devastating consequences for both the animal and the local ecosystem.
