TAINAN, Taiwan – A shadow has fallen over the Lotte Giants’ spring training camp in Taiwan following revelations that four players violated team and league regulations by visiting an illegal gambling venue. The incident, confirmed by the club on February 13, 2026, has prompted immediate disciplinary action and a formal investigation by the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO).

The players identified as being involved are Na Seung-yeop, Ko Seung-min, Kim Dong-hyuk, and Kim Se-min. According to a statement released by the Lotte Giants, the players admitted to visiting the establishment during a day off, unaware that it was operating illegally. Despite this claim, the club has taken a firm stance, ordering all four players to return home immediately.

The controversy erupted after CCTV footage circulated online, appearing to show the players inside a gaming center filled with computer monitors. The footage quickly fueled speculation about potential gambling activity, a serious offense under KBO rules. The Giants organization confirmed the visit but is still investigating the extent of the players’ involvement.

“Regardless of the reason, we will immediately order the four players, who engaged in conduct that violates Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) rules and our club regulations, to return home,” the team stated. The club has also reported the incident to the KBO’s Clean Baseball Center and will impose additional disciplinary measures based on the outcome of the league’s investigation.

The KBO’s regulations regarding gambling are stringent. Article 151 of the KBO rulebook stipulates that any registered player found to be engaging in gambling – including illegal online gambling – faces penalties ranging from a minimum of one month’s suspension from participation to a 30-game suspension and/or a fine of at least 3 million Korean won. Given the severity of the infraction, a significant suspension for each player is widely anticipated.

The timing of this scandal is particularly damaging for the Lotte Giants. Na Seung-yeop and Ko Seung-min are both key contributors to the team’s lineup. Na Seung-yeop hit nine home runs last season, second-most on the team behind Victor Reyes, and appeared in 105 games. Ko Seung-min, a versatile infielder, played in 121 games and maintained a team-third-best batting average of .271 among players with enough plate appearances to qualify. Their absence could significantly impact the Giants’ performance as they prepare for the upcoming KBO season.

The Giants finished seventh in the KBO League last season, a disappointing result after showing promise earlier in the year. The team entered spring training hoping to build momentum and address the issues that led to their late-season collapse. This incident threatens to derail those plans and create a distraction for the entire organization.

The club emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating they are conducting a thorough review to identify any further issues. “We regard the current situation as very serious, and through a full review we will respond strictly to any additional issues that come to light,” the team said in its statement. The Giants have also issued a warning to the entire player roster, reinforcing the importance of adhering to team and league regulations.

Beyond the potential disciplinary action, the incident raises questions about the players’ judgment and their understanding of the rules. The fact that they were unaware the venue was illegal does little to mitigate the severity of their actions, as players are expected to exercise caution and avoid potentially compromising situations.

The Lotte Giants are scheduled to conclude their first phase of spring training in Tainan on February 20, 2026, before traveling to Miyazaki, Japan, for further practice and exhibition games. However, the focus has now shifted from on-field preparation to damage control and addressing the fallout from this off-field controversy. The KBO’s investigation is expected to conclude swiftly, and the Giants will be bracing for the consequences as they attempt to salvage their spring training and prepare for the challenges of the upcoming season.
