Louis Bielle-biarrey Balances Fame,Focus on Rugby Preparation
Rising rugby star Louis Bielle-Biarrey faces the challenges of newfound fame while striving to maintain his focus on the game. According to his father, Joel, the young athlete is adjusting to increased attention, a stark contrast to just five years ago when he was the one seeking autographs.
One of the biggest hurdles for Bielle-Biarrey is the inability to satisfy every fan’s request. “Sometimes he steps out the dressing room and ther are 300 people waiting,” joel said. “He has maybe 10, 20, 30 minutes before he gets on the bus, he might still have to grab something to eat and he just doesn’t have time. This is what he doesn’t like.”
Bielle-Biarrey’s decision to join Bordeaux, a port city in southwestern France, was partly influenced by his desire for a less chaotic environment. He had considered Racing 92 but found Paris too overwhelming. Despite the change of scenery, Noel McNamara, Bordeaux’s attack coach, notes that Bielle-Biarrey has brought a steadfast attitude, honed from his days as an undersized fly-half.
McNamara highlights qualities beyond mere speed. “Everyone starts off with the pace, but I think that really undersells Louis’ value,” McNamara said. “Obviously he is speedy, but I have worked with an awful lot of very quick people and it doesn’t always make them exceptional rugby players. The thing about Louis is his pace, but also his anticipation, his timing and his preparation though the week.”
Bielle-Biarrey’s dedication extends beyond physical attributes.”His workrate, his attitude and his mindset are first class, and that is an impact he has on people around him,” McNamara added. ”They expect things to happen when he has the ball. It gives them the confidence to work a little harder to be in support because Louis makes things happen.”
Joel attributes some of his son’s success to his mother, Sandrine, who hails from Reunion, suggesting her background might have “spiced up the DNA.”
What’s next
As Bielle-Biarrey continues his career, the focus remains on balancing the demands of fame with the dedication required to excel on the rugby field. On Saturday, Saints will face the challenge of containing his skills.
