Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Baseball: Williams Scores on Error – Game Recap
Late Errors Plague Ragin’ Cajuns in Loss to UTRGV
LAFAYETTE, La. – A pair of costly errors in the seventh inning proved to be the difference as the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns suffered a 9-7 setback against the UTRGV Vaqueros on Tuesday at M.L. “Tigue” Moore Field at Russo Park. The Ragin’ Cajuns battled back from an early deficit, but ultimately couldn’t hold onto the lead.
Louisiana (16-19) had erased a 5-1 deficit with a five-run outburst in the third inning, taking the lead for the first time in the game. They maintained a one-run advantage through six innings before the Vaqueros capitalized on defensive miscues in the seventh.
UTRGV (22-10) jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. Issac Lopez opened the scoring with a home run to left field on the very first pitch of the game. Steven Lancia added an RBI double, and Thomas Williams contributed an RBI groundout to extend the Vaqueros’ advantage to 3-0.
The Vaqueros continued to build their lead in the second inning, adding a run on an RBI single by Owen Galt and another on a bases-loaded walk to Easton Moomow, pushing their lead to 5-1.
The Ragin’ Cajuns responded emphatically in the bottom of the third, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring five runs to take a 6-5 lead. The inning began with Conor Higgs singling up the middle, followed by Caleb Stelly reaching on an infield single to load the bases. Lee Amedee then reached on another infield single, plating Jose Torres. A subsequent bases-loaded walk to Carson Hepworth scored Higgs, tying the game. The Cajuns continued to rally, taking the lead on further offensive contributions.
However, the lead was short-lived. UTRGV rallied in the seventh, scoring three runs fueled by a pair of Louisiana errors. The Vaqueros capitalized on the defensive lapses to regain the lead and ultimately secure the victory.
The Ragin’ Cajuns will quickly regroup as they prepare to continue their seven-game road trip. They will face Louisiana Tech on Wednesday at 6 p.m., marking the start of a challenging stretch of games. Following the matchup with Louisiana Tech, Louisiana will travel to face the University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) in a Sun Belt Conference series, before concluding the road trip with a three-game series against Old Dominion in Norfolk, Virginia, from April 17-19.
Tuesday’s game highlighted the importance of clean defense, as the Ragin’ Cajuns’ errors proved costly against a determined UTRGV squad. The team will look to address these defensive issues as they embark on their road trip, hoping to regain their form and secure victories against their upcoming opponents.
