Senior point guard London Johnson has been dismissed from the Louisville men’s basketball program due to a violation of team rules and university policy, according to an official announcement from the university on Friday, Aug. 21, 2026. The dismissal ends Johnson’s Cardinals career before he could log an official minute for Pat Kelsey’s squad, altering the team’s backcourt depth heading toward the season.
Louisville Announces Dismissal and Roster Impact
University of Louisville officials released a brief statement regarding the departure, noting, London Johnson has been dismissed from the University of Louisville men’s basketball team due to a violation of team rules and University policy. We wish him the best in his future endeavors,
as reported by Yahoo Sports and the Courier Journal. The decision comes during an eventful Friday for the program, adding an unexpected roster shift just months after Johnson committed to the Cardinals last November.
According to reporting from the Courier Journal, Johnson signed with Louisville as one of the first ex-G Leaguers to return to the college ranks. At the time of that signing, Kelsey praised the addition, stating, London brings experience, talent, toughness and a winning mindset to our organization. He is a trailblazer in a lot of ways and has handled the unwarranted scrutiny like the mature, classy young man that he is,
according to the Courier Journal. Despite that initial optimism, Johnson redshirted the 2025–26 season. Pat Kelsey had briefly planned to burn that redshirt midway through the campaign to help offset a back injury suffered by Mikel Brown Jr., though Johnson ultimately never played an official game for the team.
Professional Background and Prior Experience
Before joining Louisville, Johnson built a professional resume in the NBA G League. Out of Norcross High School in Georgia, he was rated as a four-star recruit in the 2022 class before bypassing traditional college basketball to sign a two-year contract with the G-League Ignite, as detailed by Yahoo Sports. During his first season with the Ignite, he averaged 10.5 points and 3.0 assists per contest, following that up with 10.6 points and 4.9 assists per game in his second year.
After forgoing the 2024 NBA Draft, Johnson entered the G League Draft and was selected 21st overall by the Maine Celtics, according to Yahoo Sports. In three appearances with Maine, he posted averages of 2.3 points, 1.0 rebound, and 1.0 assist before getting waived and subsequently signed by the Cleveland Charge.
Backcourt Depth and Future Outlook
Johnson’s departure leaves a noticeable void in backcourt personnel for the Cardinals. Yahoo Sports notes that his exit compounds a sudden lack of depth at the guard position, arriving alongside the ongoing ineligibility situation surrounding Seth Trimble. Even so, practice reports and local insider evaluations indicate that the roster shakeup is not viewed as a critical blow to Louisville’s competitive standing for the 2026–27 campaign, according to Yahoo Sports. The program moves forward under Kelsey without the former high-profile recruit as preparations continue.
