Sydney Minsky Sargeant, the driving force behind the acclaimed post-punk outfit Working Men’s Club, is set to release a deeply personal solo project titled ‘Lunga’. This new venture marks a significant departure from the band’s signature sound, offering listeners a more intimate and introspective glimpse into Sargeant’s creative world.
A New Sonic Landscape
‘Lunga’ is described as a “beautiful side-step” from the music Sargeant has been crafting with Working Men’s Club over the past seven years. The songs on the album were written over a considerable period, with some dating back to Sargeant’s teenage years growing up in Todmorden. This extended gestation period has allowed for a rich tapestry of experiences and emotions to be woven into the fabric of the music.
“I’m trying to wear my heart-on-my-sleeve a bit more,” Sargeant shared in a press release. “These songs come from a search for meaning and understanding. I’m always trying to unpick myself and those around me, the ones I love and loved the most. There were thoughts and feelings that these songs helped me express, address and make sense of.”
This approach signifies a willingness to embrace vulnerability, acknowledging that it’s “ok to love and say that within a song because it’s a true and honest feeling and one that I’m not embarrassed to admit or accept.” Equally, sargeant emphasizes the importance of self-acceptance, stating, “But it’s also ok to say I got some stuff wrong and I’m no perfect person. I’m just living each day trying to make sense of the world around me.”
The Meaning Behind ‘Lunga’
The title ‘Lunga’ itself carries a profound message of unity and shared humanity. Sargeant explained its importance: “‘Lunga’ is another way of saying we are all one and the same deep down and that we should try to remember that a little more. In a world that has never felt so scary and polarised, I just hope this album connects with people.”
This sentiment underscores a desire for connection and understanding in an increasingly fragmented world, offering a hopeful counterpoint to the prevailing anxieties.
Beyond Working Men’s Club
Sargeant’s musical journey extends beyond his work with Working Men’s Club. He is also a member of the supergroup Demise Of love, alongside renowned producer Daniel Avery and james Greenwood, also known as Ghost Culture. The trio recently released their self-titled debut EP, further showcasing Sargeant’s versatility and collaborative spirit.
Working Men’s Club’s most recent album, ‘Fear Fear’, released in 2022, was met with critical acclaim, earning a four-star review from NME. The publication lauded the album for its ability to capture the “devastation and confusion faced in recent years,” noting that “Working Men’s Club certainly wear the trauma well, but this riveting exploration truly thrives by seeking the light beyond the gloom.” ‘Lunga’ promises to build upon this foundation of emotional honesty, offering a new dimension to Sargeant’s artistic expression.
