Love in the Time of Genetics: Abu Dhabi Makes Groundbreaking Move to Mandate Pre-Marriage DNA Testing for Citizens
Abu Dhabi Makes Genetic Testing Mandatory for Marriage
As of next month, Abu Dhabi will make genetic testing a compulsory requirement for marriage, aiming to prevent genetic defects in children. This law applies to native citizens who wish to marry from the emirate.
Abu Dhabi Premarital Examination Program
Genetic testing has been made mandatory for marriage as part of the Abu Dhabi Premarital Examination Program. This program enables the diagnosis of genetic disorders and inherited conditions through genetic testing. The health department has stated that the results will be available on the fourteenth day after the examination.
Preventive Measures for Family Life
Genetic testing is considered one of the most important preventive measures for those entering family life. The testing process includes consultation with healthcare specialists and genetic counselors. The Department of Health has confirmed that 22 primary health centers in Abu Dhabi, Al Dhafra, and Al Ain have facilities for testing and counseling.
Success Rate of Genetic Testing
According to the Department of Health, as of 2022, 86 percent of the 800 couples tested were genetically compatible. Only the remaining 14 percent required a special family planning program to have healthy babies.
