LPA Rain Trigger: Catanduanes East Trough
LPA Alert: Rainy Days Ahead for Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas
Table of Contents
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) is keeping a close eye on a low pressure area (LPA) that’s currently brewing within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR). While the LPA’s chances of developing into a full-blown tropical depression in the next 24 hours remain low, its trough is already bringing scattered rain and thunderstorms to parts of Southern Luzon and Eastern Visayas.
Where Will the Rain Fall?
As of Tuesday afternoon, August 5th, the LPA was located 570 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes. PAGASA forecasts that the trough of this LPA will directly impact the Bicol region, as well as the provinces of Quezon, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar.
Be Prepared for Potential Flooding
It’s crucial to stay vigilant, especially if you reside in these areas. The expected moderate to heavy rainfall could trigger flash floods and landslides. Keep a close watch on your local news and weather updates, and be prepared to take necessary precautions.
LPA’s Future Path: A Possible Luzon Crossing?
PAGASA Weather Specialist veronica torres notes that the LPA might approach or even cross the Luzon landmass in the coming days. This means that even areas outside the initially affected regions should monitor for potential changes in the weather.
What About tropical Cyclone Progress?
PAGASA had previously anticipated two to three tropical cyclones developing within or entering PAR this August. While this LPA’s development is uncertain, it’s a good reminder that we’re in the heart of the typhoon season. The next local tropical cyclone names on the list are Fabian, Gorio, and Huaning. Let’s hope we don’t have to use them!
Southwest Monsoon: A Weak habagat
Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon, or Habagat, remains relatively weak. It’s primarily causing isolated rain showers or thunderstorms in Palawan, Western Visayas, the Negros Island Region, and Mindanao.
Metro Manila Weather Outlook
For those of us in Metro Manila and other areas not directly affected by the LPA or the southwest monsoon, expect generally fair weather with localized thunderstorms. It’s the typical August mix of sunshine and sudden downpours, so keep an umbrella handy!
