LEGAZPI CITY – Good news for vehicle owners in Bicol! The Land Transportation Office (LTO) in Bicol (LTO-5) has begun a large-scale distribution of approximately 200,000 vehicle license plates, finally addressing a meaningful backlog that has plagued motorists for years. This initiative focuses on resolving the issues surrounding plates registered in 2017 adn earlier, specifically the older green plates and those with the seven-character plate series.
Addressing Years of Delays: What Motorists Need to Know
For many Bicolano vehicle owners, obtaining license plates has been a frustrating and lengthy process. The LTO acknowledges these difficulties and is actively working to rectify the situation. LTO Bicol Regional Director allan Castillejos emphasized that this distribution is a key part of the agency’s nationwide effort to eliminate the plate backlog.”We understand the inconvenience this has caused to our motorists,” said Director Castillejos. “This distribution is a significant step towards resolving the issue and ensuring all vehicles in the region are properly registered and identifiable.”
The LTO isn’t just waiting for motorists to come to them. They’ve proactively partnered with local government units, extending their reach down to the barangay level, to facilitate the release of these plates. This collaborative approach aims to make the process as convenient as possible for everyone.
How to Claim Your License Plate: A Step-by-Step Guide
LTO Bicol spokesperson Jamie Rose Roperes detailed the straightforward process for claiming your long-awaited license plate. All district offices are fully prepared to assist motorists with updates and claims.
Here’s what you’ll need to bring:
Original official Receipt/Certificate of Registration (OR/CR): This is the primary document verifying your vehicle ownership and registration.
Valid ID: A government-issued ID with a clear photo and signature.
Authorization Letter (if applicable): If you are claiming the plate on behalf of the vehicle owner, you’ll need a signed authorization letter.
Valid ID of the Owner (if applicable): A copy of the owner’s valid ID must accompany the authorization letter.
Deed of Sale (for second owners): If you are not the original owner, a Deed of Sale is required to prove the transfer of ownership.
Roperes assures motorists that the plates are readily available. “Motorists are advised that their long-awaited license plates can now be obtained. We encourage everyone to visit their nearest district office to claim their plates as soon as possible.”
On-Site Assistance and Roadside Verification
To further expedite the process and ensure compliance, the LTO has established roadside checkpoints. These checkpoints aren’t about issuing penalties, but rather about providing assistance.
“For those without plates, on-site LTO teams are available to facilitate the claiming process,” Roperes explained. This means that if you are stopped at a checkpoint without a plate, you’ll have the chance to resolve the issue promptly with the help of LTO personnel. This proactive approach demonstrates the LTO’s commitment to resolving the backlog and ensuring all vehicles are legally compliant.
This initiative represents a significant win for Bicolano motorists and a positive step towards a more efficient and transparent LTO system.
