Lucid Starts Production of New SUV Gravity Despite Billion-Dollar Losses
Lucid Motors Launches Gravity SUV, Hoping to Electrify Sales
Lucid Motors, the California-based electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has begun production of its highly anticipated second model, the Gravity SUV. This move comes despite the company reporting nearly $1 billion in losses during the third quarter of 2024.
Fueled by significant investments from the Middle East, Lucid remains committed to its ambitious growth plans. The Gravity, available in two trims – the Touring (starting at $79,900) and the Grand Touring ($94,900) – is poised to be a key player in the burgeoning luxury EV SUV market.
The Grand Touring, the first trim to hit dealerships, boasts an impressive 617 kW (828 horsepower) and an EPA-estimated range of 727 kilometers. Built on a brand-new SUV platform, the Gravity shares many components with Lucid’s flagship sedan, the Air, including its powerful electric motors. Like the Air, the Gravity features a 900-volt architecture, enabling rapid charging that can add approximately 320 kilometers of range in just 15 minutes using a 350 kW charger.
Designed for both comfort and practicality, the Grand Touring comfortably seats seven passengers and offers up to 3,400 liters of cargo space. Optional features include a three-chamber air suspension system and a massive 34-inch curved glass cockpit display, mirroring the technology found in the Air. Second and third-row seats fold flat, and the second row can be adjusted for added legroom.
Currently available in the U.S. market, Lucid has indicated plans to expand the Gravity’s reach to international markets.
While Lucid aims to sell 9,000 Air sedans globally this year, the vehicle’s nearly $100,000 price tag has limited its appeal. The company is pinning its hopes on the Gravity to drive significant sales growth and move closer to profitability.
