A British woman’s death in Texas following an argument with her father over Donald Trump has been ruled “unlawful” by a U.K. Coroner, more than a year after the incident. The ruling comes despite a Texas grand jury declining to indict the father, Kris Harrison, in January 2025.

Lucy Harrison, 23, from Warrington, Cheshire, died from a gunshot wound to the chest at her father’s home in Prosper, near Dallas. The inquest, concluded on February 11, 2026, found that Mr. Harrison had accidentally discharged the gun while showing it to his daughter, according to reports.

The case has drawn significant attention in both the United Kingdom and the United States, raising questions about gun ownership, accidental shootings, and the complexities of cross-jurisdictional investigations. While Texas authorities investigated the death as possible manslaughter, the Collin County grand jury decided against bringing charges. However, authorities in England initiated their own inquest, a standard procedure for sudden deaths involving British citizens, even those occurring abroad.

The inquest heard testimony from Lucy Harrison’s boyfriend, Sam Littler, who was present at the time of the shooting. Littler stated that Lucy and her father had a “big argument” about then-President-elect Donald Trump on the day of the incident. Trump was preparing to be inaugurated for his second term ten days later, adding a layer of political tension to the already fraught family dynamic.

Littler further testified that Lucy expressed discomfort with her father’s habit of displaying a firearm in the home, where her two younger half-sisters also resided. According to Littler, Kris Harrison would take the gun out of its case and handle it “like James Bond.” Mr. Harrison maintained that he kept the weapon for “home defense” and was not legally required to have a license to own or carry it under Texas law.

A friend of Lucy Harrison also testified, stating that she was “categorically anti-gun” and concerned about her father’s “volatility.” This testimony highlights the differing attitudes towards firearms between Lucy and her father, and the anxieties she reportedly felt about the presence of a gun in the household.

The U.K. Coroner’s ruling of “unlawful” killing, based on gross negligence manslaughter, differs significantly from the Texas grand jury’s decision. The standard of proof required for a criminal conviction is higher than that for an inquest finding, and legal experts have noted the contrasting approaches taken by the two jurisdictions. The inquest does not carry the same legal weight as a criminal trial and does not result in criminal charges being filed in the U.K.

Lucy Harrison worked as a fashion buyer for Boohoo at the time of her death. She had travelled to Texas to visit her father in January 2025. The investigation in the U.K. Began in February 2025, a month after the shooting, reflecting the commitment of British authorities to thoroughly examine the circumstances surrounding the death of a citizen abroad.

The case underscores the challenges faced when investigating deaths that occur outside of a country’s borders. Different legal systems, evidentiary standards, and investigative procedures can lead to divergent outcomes. The decision by U.K. Authorities to pursue an inquest despite the lack of criminal charges in Texas demonstrates the importance placed on providing answers to the family and ensuring a comprehensive examination of the facts.

The incident also reignites the debate surrounding gun control and safety, particularly in the United States. While Texas law permits individuals to own firearms without a license, the case raises questions about responsible gun ownership and the potential for accidental shootings. The differing perspectives on gun ownership between Lucy Harrison and her father, as highlighted by witness testimony, illustrate the deep divisions that exist on this issue.

The Harrison family has not released a public statement following the coroner’s ruling. The outcome of the inquest may offer some measure of closure to Lucy Harrison’s family and friends, but it also serves as a stark reminder of the tragic consequences that can arise from a combination of political disagreement, firearms, and accidental discharge.
