Ludwig Göransson Wins BAFTA for ‘Sinners’ Score, Continues Award Streak
Ludwig Göransson’s score for Sinners was awarded best original music at the 2026 BAFTA Film Awards in London on Sunday, February 22nd. This marks the second time in three years Göransson has received the honor, previously winning in 2024 for his work on Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. Daniel Blumberg won the award in 2025 for The Brutalist.
Göransson is the first composer to win the BAFTA for best original music twice within a three-year span since Gustavo Santaolalla’s wins for The Motorcycle Diaries (2004) and Babel (2006). Prior to the BAFTA win, Göransson had already secured wins for the score at the Critics Choice Awards, Golden Globes, and Grammy Awards.
The Swedish composer faced strong competition, including Alexandre Desplat, a 13-time nominee and three-time winner in the category, who was nominated for his score for Guillermo Del Toro’s Frankenstein. Göransson was not present to accept the award, with Sinners director Ryan Coogler jokingly stating he was working on a “small indie film” – a reference to Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic, The Odyssey, scheduled for release this summer.
Other nominees in the category included Jonny Greenwood (One Battle After Another), Max Richter (Hamnet), and Jerskin Fendrix (Bugonia). Notably, the same five composers are also nominated in the best original score category at the upcoming Academy Awards on March 1st, a rare occurrence – the first time in 14 years the BAFTA and Academy Awards have shared identical nominees. In 2012, the awards diverged, with Thomas Newman winning the BAFTA for Skyfall and Mychael Danna taking the Oscar for The Life of Pi.
Sinners received a total of 13 nominations at the BAFTAs and ultimately secured three awards: best original screenplay, best supporting actress for Wunmi Mosaku, and best original score. One Battle After Another was awarded best film, with Paul Thomas Anderson receiving the best director prize for his work on the film.
The ceremony also featured a performance by HUNTR/X, marking their awards show debut with a rendition of their hit song “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters. The BAFTAs differ from other major awards shows, such as the Academy Awards, in that they do not include a best original song category. HUNTR/X is scheduled to perform at the BRIT Awards on February 28th, becoming the first K-pop group to perform on that stage, and will also perform “Golden” at the Academy Awards on March 15th, where It’s nominated for best original song.
Jessie Ware delivered a moving performance of the Barbra Streisand classic “The Way We Were” during the In Memoriam segment, honoring those recently lost. The segment paid tribute to several prominent figures, including Catherine O’Hara, Rob Reiner, Brigitte Bardot, Val Kilmer, and Gene Hackman.
