Lufthansa’s Strategic Plans for ITA Airways: Expanding Networks and Enhancing Routes
Lufthansa has announced its plans for ITA Airways, as reported by Corriere della Sera. This follows the European Commission’s approval of the merger between the two airlines. The strategy includes expanding key routes, improving the hub-and-spoke model, and cutting unprofitable services.
Key Markets: Africa and the Americas
Lufthansa aims to strengthen ITA Airways’ presence in Africa and South America. The airline will focus on competing with major European airlines like Air France and British Airways. New routes, including a service to Bogotá, Colombia, are planned. Services to Brazilian cities will also increase, complementing existing flights to Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.
Eastern Europe to the US
Lufthansa intends to enhance ITA Airways’ connections, particularly through Rome Fiumicino. This involves collaborating with Air Dolomiti, its Italian regional airline. An agreement with SkyAlps, another regional airline, is also in the works, contingent on safety audits.
Furthermore, Lufthansa plans to expand ITA Airways’ network in Eastern Europe to strengthen connections to the US market. Competing effectively in this market is part of Lufthansa’s wider strategy, as demand remains strong despite existing competition. ITA will also target the leisure travel market, leveraging its Discover Airlines brand without overlapping with its existing routes.
The integration of ITA Airways into the Lufthansa Group will take at least two years.
European Consolidation
The sale of ITA Airways highlights the ongoing consolidation in the European aviation industry. Lufthansa is reportedly interested in acquiring stakes in other airlines, such as TAP Air Portugal and airBaltic. ITA’s focus on South America mirrors TAP’s strategy, which includes a strong network in Brazil. This raises questions about Lufthansa’s dual interest in both airlines as they expand their reach in the same market.
