Luigi Mangione’s Former Classmate in Arizona Expresses Shock
Former Classmate of Luigi Mangione ‘Shocked’ by Murder Suspect’s Arrest
Scottsdale, AZ – A former classmate of Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the December 4th murder of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City, is expressing shock and disbelief at the news.
Mangione, who has no known ties to Arizona, graduated from Gilman School, a private all-boys school in Baltimore, Maryland, alongside Corey Wey, a scottsdale resident. Wey,who spoke exclusively with Fox 10 Phoenix, described Mangione as a “quiet, reserved, nice kid” and a standout student.
“He was a leader in our class,” Wey recalled. “He was in many clubs,a soccer player, and he even spoke at our graduation. Every year, they choose someone who excels academically and in extracurriculars, and he was that person.”
Wey remembers Mangione as clever and well-respected within their small graduating class of around 85 to 100 students. He said nothing about Mangione’s demeanor or behavior stood out as unusual during their time at Gilman.
As the manhunt for Thompson’s killer unfolded, Wey followed the high-profile case but didn’t initially connect the suspect to his former classmate.”I had no hindrance that it was him,” Wey admitted. “I mean, in the back of my mind, I was like, I feel like that face is familiar, but it was subconsciously, not really on the forefront.”
It wasn’t until he saw Mangione’s mugshot and video of his arrest that the realization hit him.
“My initial reactions were just shocked, surprised, and I would just never suspect someone who went to our school to be involved in this,” Wey said. “So, it was just shock, really. I’m really shocked.”
