Luis Caputo Discusses Economic Outlook After Trump’s Victory
On November 21, 2024, Luis Caputo, the Minister of Economy of Argentina, spoke about the government’s ongoing discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He indicated that preparations are in progress for a new financial program, which could result in fresh funds entering the country.
Caputo highlighted an expected improvement in relations between Argentina and the United States following Donald Trump’s election victory. He noted, “There is a possibility of agreements that previously seemed more difficult.” Trump is set to take office on January 20.
In an informal conversation with the IMF, Caputo suggested that the new program will likely involve additional financial support. He explained that discussions include the amount of money and the timing of its delivery, suggesting a potential range from $1 billion to $12 billion.
Additionally, Caputo claimed that Argentina is entering a phase of monetary competition, allowing for transactions in dollars. He said this reflects a need for the economy to stabilize using both the peso and the dollar.
Caputo praised the normalization of Argentina’s macroeconomic conditions. He mentioned that this transition has occurred without negatively impacting salaries or economic activity. He noted, “Recent figures show that wages have been outpacing inflation, with October potentially marking the seventh consecutive month of this trend.”
Regarding inflation, he pointed to a drop in wholesale prices to 1.2%, levels deemed unimaginable a year ago. He expressed optimism for the upcoming year, as economic measures align with inflation forecasts in the national budget.
Caputo acknowledged the challenges facing the middle class but emphasized that the current economic trends indicate a positive direction, with inflation decreasing while essential costs are adjusted accordingly.
