German IDM Champion Lukas Tulovic will make his debut in the Superbike World Championship at the Jerez round in 2025, riding for the MGM Bonovo Ducati team. The prospect arose due to logistical considerations surrounding Pirelli tire allocation and team accommodations.
Tulovic’s Path to World Superbike
Lukas Tulovic, the reigning German IDM champion, experienced a rollercoaster of emotions recently. Initially informed of his opportunity to race in the Superbike World Championship at Jerez, he then received a cancellation notice, only for the opportunity to be reinstated. This unexpected path to the World Championship was facilitated by a unique set of circumstances.
The core issue revolved around the logistical challenges of accommodating all teams and their tire allocations with Pirelli, the official tire supplier for the Superbike World Championship. The situation with the MGM Bonovo Ducati team, which typically fields only one rider (Tarran mackenzie), required a special arrangement. Rather of being allocated half a garage, the team was granted a full garage, which they will share with the Triple-M team.
Logistical Adjustments for Ducati
Ducati Superbike racing chief Marco Zambenedetti confirmed that the arrangement is acceptable, even if it means the test team’s truck won’t be parked directly adjacent to the team’s garage. This adjustment was a key factor in enabling Tulovic’s participation.
The effort to include a German rider in the 2025 Superbike World Championship season was a collaborative one, with various parties working together to overcome the logistical hurdles.
readiness and Future Plans
Tulovic faces a challenging preparation schedule, as he will not have the opportunity to test with the full World Championship configuration of the Ducati Panigale V4R before Jerez. However, he is familiar with the motorcycle from his year competing in the IDM series, and he is accustomed to the tires and the Jerez circuit. This prior experience will be valuable as he prepares for his debut.
His first Superbike World Championship appearance is considered an vital evaluation for future opportunities. Team boss Moser intends to support Tulovic in defending his IDM title in 2026 and potentially enabling him to participate in further guest starts at World Championship rounds, contingent on technical feasibility.
