São Paulo,Brazil – Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva,79,underwent emergency surgery late Monday night for a ”brain hemorrhage” at the Sirio-Libanés Hospital in São Paulo,the hospital announced Tuesday.
“The surgery proceeded without complications. At this time, the president is doing well and is being monitored in an intensive care unit bed,” the hospital said in a statement posted on the president’s social media accounts.
Doctors explained that Lula experienced a headache and underwent an MRI in Brasília which revealed a cerebral hemorrhage. They attributed the hemorrhage to a fall Lula suffered a month and a half ago.
“He was transferred to the Sirio-Libanés Hospital in São Paulo, where a craniotomy was performed to drain the hematoma,” the hospital added.On October 19th, the president fell in the bathroom of his residence, hitting his head and sustaining a laceration on the back of his neck.Consequently of the accident, Lula was forced to cancel his trip to Russia for the BRICS summit and several other international engagements.
The hospital will hold a press conference Tuesday morning to provide further details about the surgery.
